Overview
Crime Analysis is the process of collecting, categorizing, analyzing and disseminating timely, accurate and useful information to describe crime patterns, trends and possible suspects to aid in solving crimes, arrest offenders and to help prevent further crime. In addition to providing crime information, the unit also provides administration and support staff with statistical data regarding the numbers and types of crime, and inmate statistics related to mandated state reporting.
The Sheriff’s Department serves all of unincorporated Marin. The patrol areas are divided into four locations: Southern Marin, Central/West Marin, Central/North Marin and West Marin, and they are numbered by area. Check our Statistics page to see which of the areas your community falls within and the crime statistics for each area.
The Crime Analysis Unit routinely tracks the below listed "Part 1 Crimes". The FBI Uniform Crime Report information site explains the 8 types of Part 1 classifications. They are:
- Murder and Non-negligent Manslaughter
- Forcible Rape
- Robbery
- Aggravated Assault
- Burglary
- Larceny-Theft
- Motor Vehicle Theft
- Arson
All agencies use the same reporting criteria which allows for comparison jurisdiction by jurisdiction. Please note that these are not all the crimes reported. Crimes such as vandalism, drunk driving, fraud are tracked separately and are considered “Part II Offenses.”
You may view all Marin County crime statistic information or other county or state statistics by accessing the California Crime Statistics from the California Attorney General’s Office.
The Crime Analysis Unit is under the direction of the Investigation Division Lieutenant. It is staffed by one full time and one part-time Analyst with occasional help from a student intern. If you would like to contact crime analysis please contact Susan Medina mailto:susmedina@co.marin.ca.us.
